INVESTIGATION OF THE INCIDENCE OF BPH

In order to determine the incidence of benign prostatic hypertrophy(BPH),2217 men,being over 40 years of age,were investigated in Pinghu,which is situated in the eastern part of Hangjiahu flatlands in China,with a total number of population of about 500 thousand,and 80 per cent of the residents living in rural area.
The author investigated five factories.five rural towns and two schools.Of the 2217 men included in this study,760 were peasants,485 workers,446 cadres,85 teachers and 420 others.They were divided into five groups,10-year of age as a groups.
The study was undertaken to obtain some significant conditions of micturition,including normal micturition,frequency of miturition,dysuris,retention of urine,haematuria,etc.However,further investigation included rectal examination,ultrasonography and measure of the residual urine.
The results of this study show that the number of the men who suffered from BPH averaged 20.57 per cent(456/2217)(table).

At present,it is held that the clinical manifestations of BPH usually start in men 40 years of age,that early symptom is frequency of micturition,and the histological change starts in one"s thirties.This data showed that the incidence of BPH increased in men progressively with their age,and is tending to increase along with the prolongation of average life-span at home.
